Hometown: Edinburgh

Line-up: Scott Bullen (guitar), Jamie Steel (bass), Paul Bannon (drums)

Overview: At times, Lady North are like the aural equivalent of being beaten over the head with a huge baseball bat: often too loud and complex for your average rock listener. But those well-versed in the “math rock” genre will find much to enjoy here. Insane time signatures, spastic rhythms, mammoth percussion, spine-severing riffage – this band has all the traits of a northern Caballero. On latest single “Bum Jiggy” released via Gerry Loves Records, they’ve amped up the speed and distortion – an eloquently stuttered statement of instability and grace all at once.

The buzz: “mathematic riff magicians” – The Skinny, “a booming artillery of bass, drum, guitar and effects pedals” – The Scotsman
